A CALL TO WISE ELDERs: Leaving A Legacy Of Goodness For Future Generations by Richard Matzkin
We live in chaotic times. Those of us who have lived long and experienced much have gained depth and perspective. "A CALL TO WISE ELDERS" is a clarion call to Boomers to step up and, by their example, serve as mentors for future generations. I am aiming for publication late 2026.
The Sculptor: Art as a Path to Truth
Richard Matzkin is also a practicing sculptor whose three-dimensional work explores many of the same themes as his writing — the human body, the passage of time, the beauty of age, and the dignity of the elder. His sculptures of older people are documented alongside Alice's paintings in the Art of Aging project and have been exhibited in Ojai and beyond.
His sculpture is inseparable from his broader creative philosophy: that art — whether made with words, clay, paint, or percussion — is most powerful when it tells the truth about what it means to be alive, to love, to age, and to face the full complexity of the human experience with open eyes and an open heart.
The Men's Movement Pioneer
Richard Matzkin has been active in the men's movement since the early 1980s — placing him among the founding generation of thinkers, writers, and activists who began asking, decades before it became culturally mainstream, what healthy masculinity could and should look like.
His work in this space is not theoretical. It is lived, tested, and refined through years of workshops, writing, personal practice, and the kind of difficult conversations that most men spend their lives avoiding. His MANifesto stands as one of the most direct and urgent expressions of this lifelong commitment — a book that names, without flinching, both the damage that unconscious masculinity causes and the breathtaking potential that conscious masculinity contains.
His essays for The Good Men Project — one of the internet's most important platforms for evolving conversations about men and masculinity — extend this work into the digital age, reaching new generations of men with the same essential message Richard has been carrying for forty years.
The Essayist: Writing for The Good Men Project
Richard is a contributing author to The Good Men Project, where his essays explore masculinity, aging, love, and the full complexity of what it means to be a man in the modern world. His pieces are personal, philosophical, and profoundly honest — written with the voice of a man who has done the inner work and is willing to share both the struggle and the reward.
The Complete Bibliography of Richard Matzkin
1. MANifesto: A Call For Men To Become Warriors For Kindness
Richard's landmark manifesto for men — a passionate, unflinching call to reimagine masculinity not as dominance or detachment, but as courage in service of kindness. Drawing on more than four decades in the men's movement, Richard challenges men to become warriors not of violence or ego, but of compassion, integrity, and genuine human connection. MANifesto is the distillation of everything Richard has witnessed, learned, and lived about what men are capable of when they choose to evolve.
2. Loving Promises: The Master Class for Creating Magnificent Relationship
A dual award-winning guide to building relationships of extraordinary depth, honesty, and beauty. Loving Promises offers readers a practical and philosophical framework for creating what Richard calls "magnificent relationship" — not the Hollywood fantasy, but the real, hard-won, luminous thing that emerges when two people commit fully to seeing and being seen. Born from Richard's own nearly 40-year marriage to Alice, this book is as personal as it is universal.
3. The Art of Aging: Celebrating the Authentic Aging Self
Co-created with Alice Matzkin, The Art of Aging is perhaps the most celebrated work of Richard's career — a nationally acclaimed collaboration of fine art, photography, and writing that reframes aging as a journey of beauty, wisdom, and spiritual richness rather than decline. The book, and the broader project it represents, earned a landmark feature on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2001 and introduced millions of Americans to a radically different way of seeing older people. It is a dual award-winning work that stands as one of the most important cultural contributions to the conversation about aging in modern American life.
4. Becoming Love Able
In Becoming Love Able, Richard turns his lens inward, exploring what it truly means — and what it actually takes — to become someone worthy of deep, lasting love. Not through performance or perfection, but through the kind of genuine self-knowledge, emotional courage, and radical honesty that makes real intimacy possible. A natural companion to Loving Promises, this book completes Richard's vision of what a conscious, loving partnership can look like.
5. Journey Into Adulthood: Initiation and Navigating
Journey Into Adulthood addresses one of the most overlooked crises in modern life — the absence of meaningful initiation rites for young men and women transitioning from adolescence into genuine adulthood. Drawing on ancient traditions, modern psychology, and his own experience in the men's movement, Richard offers a roadmap for navigating the threshold between youth and full human maturity with intention, courage, and community.
6. Love and Time: Embracing Change in Relationships
Richard's most recent work, Love and Time explores how relationships change — and how they can deepen rather than diminish — as the years pass and life inevitably transforms both partners. Written from the vantage point of a man who has been in a conscious, loving marriage for nearly four decades, this book is a meditation on impermanence, commitment, and the extraordinary gift of choosing to love the same person across the full arc of a shared life.
Selected Essays
"Losing 'Manliness' From Aging" One of Richard's most widely resonant essays — a frank, courageous examination of what happens to a man's identity when age begins to erode the physical and professional markers by which he has always defined himself. Richard writes with unflinching honesty about growing softer, slower, and less "manly" by conventional measures — and the unexpected freedom that comes from letting go of those measures entirely.
"Age is a great thief. The passing years steal the things we had found important in our lives and takes away the ways we had defined ourselves."
"I now characterize myself more by who I am, rather than what I have or am able to accomplish."
"I Love the Way My Old Wife Looks" Perhaps Richard's most beloved essay — a tender, radically honest meditation on beauty, love, and what it means to truly see the person you have chosen to grow old with. Writing about his wife Alice at 81, Richard describes a beauty that has nothing to do with surfaces and everything to do with the soul that has shaped them.
"Looking through the lens of my love for her has given me this vision."
"While surface beauty is dependent on youth, inner beauty is ageless."
"Being a 'Good Boy'" A probing exploration of how the conditioning men receive in childhood — to be agreeable, compliant, and self-effacing — can follow them into adulthood and undermine their capacity for authentic self-expression, healthy boundaries, and genuine intimacy.
The Jazz Drummer: Rhythm as a Way of Being
Richard is a jazz drummer — and it would be a mistake to treat this as a footnote. Jazz, perhaps more than any other art form, demands the simultaneous practice of deep listening, spontaneous response, and ego-free collaboration. These are, not coincidentally, exactly the qualities Richard champions in his books on relationships and masculinity.
The discipline of jazz has shaped Richard's approach to everything — his writing, his relationships, his understanding of what it means to be truly present with another human being. The Collaborator: A 40-Year Creative Partnership
At the center of Richard Matzkin's life and work is his marriage to Alice Matzkin — an artist, a force of nature, and by his own repeated, public testimony, the great love and creative catalyst of his life. Their partnership, now spanning more than 40 years, is not merely romantic. It is one of the most sustained and generative creative collaborations in the contemporary American arts and letters scene.
Together they have produced The Art of Aging — a project that earned national media recognition including an Oprah Winfrey Show feature in 2001. Together they maintain thematzkins.com as the home base for their shared artistic vision. Together they have been documented by the Focus on the Masters Art Archive — Richard in 2010, Alice in 2005 — making them one of the rare couples in that distinguished archive.
Richard has written about Alice with a candor and devotion that is itself a form of art — particularly in his Good Men Project essay "I Love the Way My Old Wife Looks," which stands as one of the most moving tributes to long-married love in contemporary American writing.

Philosophy: Kindness as the Highest Form of Strength
If there is a single thread running through every book Richard Matzkin has written, every

essay he has published, every sculpture he has shaped, and every conversation he has brought his full self to, it is this:
Kindness is not weakness. It is the most demanding, the most courageous, and the most transformative thing a human being can practice.
This is the thesis of MANifesto. It is the foundation of Loving Promises. It is the spirit alive in every portrait Alice painted and every sculpture Richard shaped for The Art of Aging. It is what four decades in the men's movement taught him, what nearly forty years of conscious marriage confirmed, and what he continues to carry — with urgency and with hope — into every word he writes.
Richard Matzkin does not write about kindness as a soft virtue. He writes about it as a warrior's discipline — something that requires more courage than aggression, more strength than dominance, and more commitment than any conventional measure of masculine achievement has ever demanded.
In a cultural moment desperately searching for new models of what men can be, Richard Matzkin has been offering one, quietly and persistently, for more than forty years.

Alice Matzkin's brush bursts with life after loss |

Shocked by their aging bodies, Richard and Alice explored their fear and curiosity about growing older through Alice's paintings and his sculptures, the wisdom of elders, and the written word. Together, they created the dual award-winning art and inspirational book,THE ART OF AGING: Celebrating The Authentic Aging Self.
Moved by his magnificent 43-year marriage to Alice, Richard wrote another dual award-winning book, LOVING PROMISES: The Master Class For Creating Magnificent Relationship. He used their partnership as a living laboratory to research the elements that comprise a truly loving, magnificent relationship.

Inspired by the changing times, Richard wrote the book, MANIFESTO: A Call To Men To Become Warriors For Kindness. This is a beautifully illustrated poetic essay that calls for men of goodwill to address the greedy, uncaring actions of men whose inability to love is causing pain and suffering in the world. It challenges us to take on the essential, life-changing work of opening our own hearts to love.
BECOMING LOVE-ABLE: How A Man Can Become A More Loving Partner is a reworking of LOVING PROMISES from a male perspective using the interest, language, and understanding of men.

LOVE and TIME: Embracing Change, Growth And Mature Relationships In The Winter Of Life. This book explores, from many different angles, the powerful influence of the passage of time on a person's life and relationships. Richard wrote this as he was entering his eighties.
JOURNEY INTO ADULTHOOD: A Young Person's Initiation For NavigatingThe Seasons Of Their Life. By Richard Matzkin
This book is a "Bird's Eye View" for young people, late teens to young adult, as to what they might expect over the course of their lifetime. It compares the stages of life to the seasons of the year, and contains wise advice from an elder for living a fruitful, beneficial and joy filled life. "This the book I wish I had read when I was young."
